If like me you are a fan of the film the Holiday staring Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, the English village of Shere in Guildford is an absolute must visit for 2020. The beautiful quintessential English village is the perfect location for this Surrey Hills walk, with plenty of chocolate box cottages, and, The famous White Horse pub. One of my favourite parts about this area are all of the quirky and unique properties, it’s impossible to visit and not leave with serious house envy!
THE HOLIDAY
Diaz and Kate Winslet play an American and Brit who swap homes over Christmas. Winslet’s character, Iris, is delighted to find herself in Amanda’s luxurious home in LA, while Diaz’s character is disappointed with her idyllic country cottage in the English village of Shere – until Jude Law knocks on the door.
HONEYSUCKLE COTTAGE
If you have watched The Holiday you will be familiar with Iris’s perfect chocolate box home, Rose Hill cottage. The film crew built the exterior of Iris’s cottage in a field in Shere, next to the church and the interior scenes where shot in the studio. However, the cottage is believed to have been inspired by a real one in Surrey called Honeysuckle cottage, you can view the old Rightmove link here. The village has plenty of beautiful cottages, each very unique and exploring the village is a little like stepping back in time. Shere is the perfect location for endless Surrey Hills walks, you will never be short of places to explore.
SURREY HILLS WALK
From the village of Shere there are plenty of trails leading out of the village to walk through the countryside and enjoy the beautiful views of the Surrey Hills. Choose your direction and get exploring! The map below outlines the route I took which was perfect for a long afternoon walk through various terrain.
Shere is the perfect English village location to explore the beautiful Surrey Hills and a must visit for ‘The Holiday’ fans.
